Gas: the reference price climbs 7.3% on 1 September

What changes on 1 September

France's energy regulator (CRE) publishes a monthly reference price for natural gas. The September 2026 figure is out: €0.13474 per kWh on the heating profile, up from €0.1253 in August. That is a 7.3% rise in one month. The standing charge does not move: €360.79 a year, roughly €30 a month.

The benchmark is not a regulated tariff

France's regulated gas tariff ended in July 2023. Since then this monthly CRE benchmark has been the market's compass: many indexed offers track it, up and down. It binds nobody, but it shows where the market is going.

In practice, for a gas-heated home

At 12,000 kWh a year, a kWh moving from €0.1253 to €0.13474 adds roughly €113 over the year, if your offer tracks the benchmark in full. Fixed-price offers stay put: the supply part keeps its signed level, and only taxes and network charges can move.

Fixed or indexed?

One month of increase does not make a trend, but it is a good reason to check what you are paying. Our gas comparison uses the benchmark of the month in force as its reference, and every offer displays its real kWh price alongside.
