Switching electricity provider: the complete 2026 guide

Why switch now?

Since the market opened in 2007, more than 40 suppliers compete on the French electricity market. Price gaps between the regulated tariff (EDF's Tarif Bleu) and the most competitive offers regularly reach 10 to 12% on the kWh price, that is €150 to €250 a year for an electrically heated home.

What the law says

Switching supplier is free, outage-free and commitment-free for residential customers. Your new supplier handles the cancellation: you have nothing to send. Your meter, your line and the quality of your electricity remain strictly identical. Only the price changes.

The 3 steps

1. Grab a recent bill (for your delivery point number and annual consumption).
2. Compare offers at equal consumption: standing charge + kWh price, not just the advertised discount percentage.
3. Subscribe: the switch takes effect within 21 days at most, often 48 hours.

Pitfalls to avoid

Beware of discounts "on the pre-tax price" (taxes are a third of the bill), uncapped indexed prices, and rock-bottom first-year prices followed by increases. Our Réglo Score factors price stability into its rating precisely to neutralise these bait effects.
